To apply for admittance to the program, students must be admitted to the OSU Graduate College and submit the following information as part of the online application process.

Applying to the Graduate Program in Food Science

Application Deadlines:
Applications may be submitted at any time.  However for full consideration of financial support the following deadlines are recommended.

  • February 15:  for fall and summer semester admission
  • October 1:  for spring semester admission

How do I Apply?

  1. Go to the official online site https://www.applyweb.com/apply/oksugrad/ (and pay the application fee)

What Materials Are Required?

(Please note that all of the application materials are submitted electronically as part of the online application process.)


  1. Official transcripts from all institutions where you have done college level coursework. All transcripts provided with the application should be scans of official transcripts showing the college’s or registrar’s original seal and any degrees completed.  
  2. GRE score report (Note:  OSU's GRE institution code is 6546, and the code for the Food Science program is 0107).
  3. Statement of background and goals (2-3 page statement).  This should include the specific area and direction of your career goals and the kind of research and coursework that would support these career goals. You should also indicate why you have applied to the program at OSU and which faculty members you would like to work with, if admitted.  
  4. Recommendations letters from at least three references.  These may come from former professors or employers who know the quality your work. The letters should describe your abilities, dedication, and focus to succeed in graduate school.     
  5. Curriculum Vitae/Resume.


In addition, all international students must also submit:

  1. TOEFL exam or the IELTS (academic stream) exam; the exam must have been taken within the last two years.


What Are the Program’s Admission Requirements?

The Food Science graduate faculty members consider a variety of factors when making an admission recommendation, and academic background (i.e., the courses you have taken as an undergraduate) and test scores will be considered along with your statement of goals. 

  • GPA - The program prefers a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 undergraduate for admission to the masters program and 3.5 graduate for admission to the PhD program (on a 4.0 scale)
  • GRE - The program prefers a minimum 3.5 score on the analytical writing portion of the exam, but scores on the verbal and quantitative components will also be considered. 
  • For international students, the university and the program require a minimum score of 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) or an IELTS academic stream score of at least 6.5. 

Please note that before admission, you need to establish an adviser/advisee relationship with a food science faculty member. No student will be admitted into the program unless a faculty advisor has been identified and has agreed to accept that student as his or her advisee.
